MEPs call on Sudan and South Sudan to find a peace agreementReturning External Relations - 13/06/2012 - 12:54 The Parliament urges Sudan and South Sudan to seek negotiated solutions to the outstanding issues, in a resolution approved Wednesday. The text calls for the two countries to implement the roadmap of the United Nations adopted in May and reach an agreement by August on economic issues, including exploitation of oil, on the demarcation of borders and access of humanitarian aid.In the resolution adopted by show of hands, MEPs underline that the starting point for constructive negotiations should be the creation of a demilitarized and secure borders, as well as the unconditional withdrawal of all armed forces within its borders.Resolve outstanding issues by AugustMembers are pleased to have been resumed direct talks in Addis Ababa and that both States have accepted the roadmap endorsed by the UN Security Council on May 2, fixing a period of three months to resolve issues post Civil-pending, including the exploitation of oil. Moreover, the demarcation of the borders is essential for peace and stability in the region and therefore MEPs call on Sudan and South Sudan to use the services provided by the African Union for this purpose.Address the humanitarian emergencyThe document recalls that the priority is the grave humanitarian situation caused by the fighting between the Sudan and South Sudan and by the continued fighting in the states of Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile. According to estimates by officials of the United Nations, about one million people could die of hunger, if not receive food aid in coming months.Sudan and South Sudan must allow immediate access of UN staff and other humanitarian personnel to populations affected. Moreover, the European Union and the international community must honor its funding commitments to the region, especially to address the severe shortage of food aid and emergency facilities and protection.Support the strengthened UN presenceThe Parliament welcomes the decision of the United Nations Security Council to extend the mandate of the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) and to send additional peacekeepers in the country, for the peaceful development of two self-sufficient states.
